Patagonia eSIM: Chile and Argentina on one trip

Most travel eSIMs use Movistar in Chile and Argentina; locals favour Entel and Claro in remote Patagonia. Prices for one or both countries; where signal ends.

Our take

For a Patagonia trip across both countries, one Maya Mobile eSIM ($27.99 for 14 days) is the simplest buy; for a trip in one country, Ubigi was cheapest. The bigger issue is the network: nearly every eSIM we compared uses Movistar in both Chile and Argentina, while local sources say Entel (Chile) and Claro (Argentina) reach furthest into remote Patagonia. On the trails themselves, from the Torres del Paine W to the Fitz Roy hikes and long stretches of the Carretera Austral, no network has signal, so plan for days offline and carry satellite backup.

Lotso Travel appears in the tables below; it's run by the team behind this site. In Patagonia it's mid-table on price and doesn't name its network.

The network problem

Here's what the eSIM providers list for each country on their own pages (31 October 2026), next to what local sources recommend for remote areas:

Chile Argentina
Airalo Movistar (+ 1 other) Movistar
Holafly Telefónica (Movistar) Telefónica (Movistar)
Nomad Movistar Movistar
Saily, Ubigi, Maya, Lotso Not named Not named
Widest rural reach, per locals Entel, then Movistar Claro, ahead of Personal and Movistar

In Chile, ViajareSIM's March 2026 guide says "Entel tiene la red más extensa del país en zonas rurales y remotas" (Entel has the country's widest network in rural and remote areas) and that on the Carretera Austral, in the north and in the mountains, it's the network most likely to have signal where others don't, with Movistar next. In Argentina, its companion guide recommends Claro for remote areas such as Patagonia and says Movistar "tampoco llega tan lejos como Claro" (doesn't reach as far as Claro). ViajareSIM sells eSIMs itself, so treat this as one well-informed opinion and check the operators' coverage maps for your route.

What it means: in Chile, Movistar is a reasonable second-best and the eSIMs are fine. In Argentine Patagonia, a Movistar eSIM may go quiet sooner than a local Claro SIM. If you'll spend most of the trip around El Calafate, El Chaltén and Ushuaia, consider a local Claro SIM for Argentina as well, bought once you arrive.

For two weeks in Chile, Ubigi ($24 for 10 GB) and Nomad ($25, Movistar) were cheapest; in Argentina, Ubigi ($23), Maya Mobile ($27.99) and Nomad ($28). Airalo is poor value in Argentina: no 15-day pass, so two weeks meant two 7-day passes at $69 (or $66 mixing a 10-day and a 5-day pass).

What it costs: both countries

Most Patagonia itineraries cross the border at least once: Puerto Natales to El Calafate, or the Carretera Austral into Los Antiguos. Here's a week in each country at 0.5 GB a day, buying each provider's cheapest fitting plan per country, against one multi-country eSIM:

Option Chile, 7 days Argentina, 7 days Total eSIMs to install
Maya Mobile, one 14-day pass covered covered $27.99 1
Nomad, two country plans $14 $16 $30 2
Saily, two country plans $17.99 $16.99 $34.98 2
Lotso Travel (ours), two country plans $17.99 $17.99 $35.98 2
Ubigi, two country plans $16 $23 $39 2
Airalo, two 7-day passes $27.50 $34.50 $62 2
Holafly, two 7-day passes $28.50 $36.90 $65.40 2

Computed from each provider's country prices in our price index, 31 October 2026. Regional "South America" plans weren't part of our index, so we haven't compared them.

Maya wins on simplicity as much as price: one eSIM, installed once at home, with no need to buy and install a second one in a border town with weak Wi-Fi. Its weakness is the same as everywhere: it doesn't tell you which network it uses.

Where signal stops

Place What to expect Source
Puerto Natales Acceptable signal ViajareSIM, Chile
Torres del Paine (W and O) Very limited; a little at some points, most have none Same; see our W Trek guide
Carretera Austral Coyhaique has coverage; "long stretches" have no signal from any operator Same
Chiloé Towns covered; rural interior fragmented Same
El Calafate Acceptable; at Perito Moreno, near the walkways but not always stable ViajareSIM, Argentina
El Chaltén Some signal in the village (Claro 3G/4G since Dec 2022); practically none on the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre trails Same; BNamericas
Ushuaia 4G in the city; Tierra del Fuego National Park only near the entrance ViajareSIM, Argentina

Download offline maps for the whole region before you leave the city, including the Carretera Austral if you're driving it: the ViajareSIM guide calls offline maps mandatory there.

Satellite backup in Patagonia

Neither Chile nor Argentina is on Apple's list for iPhone Emergency SOS via satellite. In Chile, Entel launched texting via Starlink's direct-to-cell satellites in November 2025 for customers on certain Entel plans, according to Tesla North; the report doesn't say whether visitors or roaming phones can use it, and a travel eSIM doesn't give you access. For multi-day hikes on the O Circuit, the Huemul Circuit or anywhere off the main trails, carry a satellite messenger: inReach vs ZOLEO vs SPOT compares what they cost to own, and notes why the Iridium-based ones suit the far south.

Questions people ask

Is there cell service in El Chaltén?

In the village, some: Claro brought 3G and 4G to El Chaltén in December 2022, per BNamericas. On the trails to Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre there's practically none, according to a March 2026 guide by ViajareSIM, which advises treating your phone as a camera and offline GPS on those hikes.

Which mobile network is best in Patagonia?

In Chile, Entel has the widest rural coverage, with Movistar next, per ViajareSIM's March 2026 Chile guide. In Argentina, the same publisher says Claro reaches furthest in remote Patagonia, ahead of Personal and Movistar. ViajareSIM sells eSIMs, so check operator maps too. Most travel eSIMs we compared run on Movistar in both countries.

Can one eSIM cover Chile and Argentina?

Yes. Maya Mobile's single eSIM covers both (it sells one price in 165+ countries): $27.99 for 14 days of unlimited data on 31 Oct 2026. Buying two country plans from Nomad for a week in each cost about $30 at 0.5 GB a day.
