On Kilimanjaro you'll find signal in spots, not along the trail. Tanzanian tour operators describe coverage that's "patchy, at some camps and on parts of the crater rim", usually one or two places a day where your guide knows a phone will connect. On the Marangu route, the state broadband network installed in 2022 reaches Horombo Huts at 3,720 m. There's no electricity on the mountain, so battery, not data, is what usually runs out.
We haven't climbed Kilimanjaro for this site. What follows draws on Tanzanian operators, news reports on the mountain's connectivity, and the eSIM providers' own pages.
What's known about coverage
| Source | What it says | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Tranquil Kilimanjaro (operator) | Coverage "practically the entire way to the top" in theory, unreliable in some terrain; usually one or two chances a day; the government's high-speed internet "covers up to Horombo huts"; lists Vodacom, Airtel, Halotel, Tigo and TTCL | Updated Sep 2022 |
| Jaynevy Tours (operator) | Signal is "patchy, at some camps and on parts of the crater rim"; "there is no electricity on the mountain" | 2026 page, undated |
| NBC News | Tanzania Telecommunications Corp. broadband provides Wi-Fi up to Horombo Huts (3,720 m); summit planned | 2022 |
| ITWeb | Vodacom installed a base station at Marangu, making the summit "the highest point on the planet covered by" GSM | Apr 2001 |
None of these is a coverage map, and two are older than you'd like. Read them together and the pattern is consistent: lower camps and the Marangu side are better served, connections come in known spots, and you shouldn't plan on daily contact. We couldn't find a published update confirming the summit broadband extension.
Which eSIM for Tanzania
Tanzania is expensive for fixed plans and the networks differ by provider, which matters more here than the price. Two weeks at 0.5 GB a day, for a climb plus a few days of safari:
Nomad was cheapest at $19 and uses Airtel. Holafly is the only one listing Vodacom, the operator with the longest history on the mountain, but its unlimited passes cost $54.90 for 15 days. Airalo lists Halotel plus one other. Maya Mobile and Saily don't name a network.
Lotso Travel, run by our team, is the most expensive option here at $56.99, and we'd pick something else for Tanzania.
Power: the real constraint
Jaynevy Tours puts it plainly: "There is no electricity on the mountain, so bring a power bank", and keep it warm "in your sleeping bag at night", since lithium batteries lose capacity in the cold. Six or seven days without a socket means airplane mode most of the time, switching on at the spots your guide points out.
Satellite backup
Tanzania isn't on Apple's Emergency SOS via satellite list (5 October 2026), and direct-to-cell services don't reach it. If you want your own satellite line rather than relying on your outfitter's, a Garmin inReach or ZOLEO is the option, both on Iridium. Ask your operator before you book what communication its guides carry and how they handle evacuations; that matters more than what's in your pocket. Our satellite vs eSIM guide compares the plans.
- A Tanzania eSIM installed at home; Nomad (Airtel) was cheapest, Holafly lists Vodacom
- Two power banks, kept warm overnight; there's no electricity on the mountain
- Offline maps of your route and of Moshi and Arusha
- Your operator's emergency contact numbers written down, not only on your phone
- A satellite messenger if you want your own line beyond your guide's
Questions people ask
Is there phone signal on Kilimanjaro?
Patchy. Tanzanian operators describe signal at some camps and on parts of the crater rim, usually in a few known spots rather than continuously. Tranquil Kilimanjaro says your guide can show you where they are.
Is there Wi-Fi on Kilimanjaro?
Tanzania's state telecom company installed a broadband network on the mountain in 2022 that, per NBC News, provides Wi-Fi up to Horombo Huts at 3,720 m on the Marangu route, with plans to extend it to the summit. Don't count on it on other routes.
Which network works best on Kilimanjaro?
There's no published comparison by route. Vodacom installed a base station at the foot of the mountain near Marangu in 2001 and said it covered the summit. Today's eSIMs use different operators: Holafly lists Vodacom, Nomad Airtel and Airalo Halotel.
Does iPhone satellite SOS work on Kilimanjaro?
No. Tanzania isn't on Apple's Emergency SOS via satellite list (5 Oct 2026). Climbers who want satellite backup carry a Garmin inReach or ZOLEO, and it's worth asking your operator what its guides carry.
